Absorption of dietary cholesterol in man.
Cholesterol absorption was studied by balance methods in 10 hyper!ipemic subjects. The cholesterol (401-1214 mg/day) and j:?-sitosterol (171-454 mg/ day) were integral parts of the diets. The absorption was 37% :±: 5% and the amounts of cholesterol absorbed were 149-508 mg/day. The amounts absorbed had an excellent correlation with the dietary intake of cholesterol {r = 0.98), and there was no ...
متن کاملDietary Phospholipids and Intestinal Cholesterol Absorption
Experiments carried out with cultured cells and in experimental animals have consistently shown that phospholipids (PLs) can inhibit intestinal cholesterol absorption. Limited evidence from clinical studies suggests that dietary PL supplementation has a similar effect in man. A number of biological mechanisms have been proposed in order to explain how PL in the gut lumen is able to affect chole...
متن کاملDietary Sphingomyelin Lowers Hepatic Lipid Levels and Inhibits Intestinal Cholesterol Absorption in High-Fat-Fed Mice
Controlling intestinal lipid absorption is an important strategy for maintaining lipid homeostasis. Accumulation of lipids in the liver is a major risk factor for metabolic syndrome and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. It is well-known that sphingomyelin (SM) can inhibit intestinal cholesterol absorption. It is, however, unclear if dietary SM also lowers liver lipid levels. In the present stud...
متن کاملEzetimibe inhibits the incorporation of dietary oxidized cholesterol into lipoproteins.
Oxidized cholesterol is present in significant quantities in the typical Western diet. When ingested, oxidized cholesterol is absorbed by the small intestine and incorporated into both chylomicrons and LDL, resulting in LDL that is more susceptible to further oxidation. Feeding studies in animal models and epidemiological studies in humans have suggested that oxidized cholesterol in the diet in...
متن کاملABCA1 is essential for efficient basolateral cholesterol efflux during the absorption of dietary cholesterol in chickens.
The ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) participates in the efflux of cholesterol from cells. It remains unclear whether ABCA1 functions to efflux cholesterol across the basolateral or apical membrane of the intestine. We used a chicken model of ABCA1 dysfunction, the Wisconsin hypoalpha mutant (WHAM) chicken, to address this issue. After an oral gavage of radioactive cholesterol, the p...
